Introducing the NEX-5990 Universal I/O Tap Interface Board for Machine Monitoring

The NEX-5990 was designed by Nexas Networks to enable easy tapping of machine tool input and output lines for machine tool monitoring and OEE purposes.

This Universal Machine Data Collection Interface board has 3 basic sections:

1. Power Supply (top right):

The NEX-5990 unit can take in 24VDC (or less) and provide a stable 5 VDC (2A), selectable 9VDC (1A) or 12VDC (1A) and 24VDC Filtered output. The board actually allows for power from the Fanuc serial cable (DB25F), and externally from normal DC wall cubes as long as the input voltage is 2 Volts or more higher that desired output voltage for maximum flexibility (input range 7-30 VDC). The output rails are fused with a self-resetting fuse for safety and go to a quick-disconnect Phoenix style header. The external voltage in is filtered for EMF and can take direct shorts and bounce back. It is great for powering external units (like our Nexas ORiON, handheld terminals, bar code readers and PLCs for a plug 'n play interface finally.

2. I/O Tap Matrix (bottom right):

This feature of the NEX-5990 allows for IDC ribbon cables to tap various CNC connectors or various sizes (e.g. IDC 50 for Fanuc MDI panels, or Honda MR50 connectors for I/O Boards) using a Y cable - one end to the source, one end to the cable and the tail to our board. This method allows for up to 64 pin connectors to have their lines easily tapped for signals used in machine monitoring or safety applications. So far the anticipated connectors are IDC 20, 26, 40, 50 & 64 + Honda MR50, MR20, MR25 & DB25 with special adapters to IDC provided separately. The main feed comes in on the left and then the field technician uses jumpers to select the desired lines to place over on the output side using either the header or the vertical 3 Phoenix connectors in the middle, to tap up to 8 I/O and power for output. This method of tapping lines enables field experimentation and power sourcing. It also has self-resetting fuses and LEDs on each output. To make it even easier jumpers are on-board to set the 2 commons to sinking (GND) or sourcing (+24VDC). Once again Phoenix quick disconnect connectors are used to make installation easier.

3. Fanuc Cable Conversion (left side):

Fanuc is a common CNC control vendor that has a DB25-F connector with 24VDC on pin 25 and requires 6,8&20 jumpered which is non-standard in the PC world. We have added a DB25-M connector and translated the lines to a DB9-M serial connector that one can use a plain DB9-FF null modem cable to talk to your laptop (or our Nexas ORiON). It also taps the 24VDC off the line and has jumpers to short CTS/RTS, power the high voltage to the DB9-M pin 9 or disable the unused pins in the DB9-M that the standard null modems have jumpered (pins 1, 4 & 6). A diode prevents power from the external source from contaminating the Pin 25 of the Fanuc DB25 connector by the way.

The NEX-5990 is magnetic mounted on a plastic base and can come with various cable sets and adapters if specified. We have kits available with the standard IDC ribbon cables, extensions, power cables, IDC tools, etc. If you are trying to diagnose a machine, install a machine monitoring or enable an Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) system then the NEX-5990 will be a welcome addition to your tool kit.

Many well meaning productivity and production monitoring projects fall down when the data is hard to extract from the varied legacy controllers. This product is designed to make your job easier. Note also that we have a series of connectors that enable the IDC ribbon cable in this Y eavesdrop manner to be used in controllers.
